Three names for one amount

A fraction states part divided by whole. A decimal uses place value. A percent compares with 100. For example, 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%. The percent number is 100 times the decimal number, but the percent symbol means divide by 100, so the represented value stays the same.

Predict · change · explain

See the whole and its parts.

Predict first. Change one value, then explain what stays the same and what changes. All bars use the same scale within a model.

Convert by reasoning about 100

To convert a percent to a decimal, divide its number by 100: 6% = 0.06. To convert a decimal to a percent, multiply the decimal by 100 and write %. To convert a fraction, divide numerator by denominator and then express that value per hundred. Alternatively, make an equivalent fraction with denominator 100 when convenient.

Keep exact values until rounding is needed

One third is exactly 1/3, or 0.333… repeating, or 33 1/3%. It is approximately 33.3% to the nearest tenth of a percent. Use an equals sign for exact equivalents and an approximation sign for rounded values. Convert decimals to fractions using place value, then simplify.

Worked examples

Write 12.5% as a decimal and fraction

  1. 12.5 ÷ 100 = 0.125.
  2. 0.125 = 125/1000 = 1/8.
  3. Therefore 12.5% = 0.125 = 1/8.

Write 7/20 as a percent

  1. Multiply both numerator and denominator by 5.
  2. 7/20 = 35/100 = 35%.
  3. Check: 7 ÷ 20 = 0.35.

Guided Practice

Write 0.045 as a percent and a simplified fraction.

A first hint

There are 45 thousandths; multiply the decimal by 100 to name it as a percent.

Compare your reasoning

0.045 = 4.5% = 45/1000 = 9/200.
