Order of operations

Keep the order of the operations separate from the signs of the numbers.

Understand it

Make the idea make sense.

01

Use a hierarchy, not six independent rules

Evaluate inside brackets first, then exponents. Next, perform multiplication and division from left to right. Finally, perform addition and subtraction from left to right. BEDMAS is a reminder of these levels, not an instruction to do every multiplication before every division.

02

Carry the signs with their numbers

In −3 + 2 × (−4), the first term is −3 and the product is 2 × (−4) = −8. The remaining expression is −3 + (−8), giving −11.

03

Brackets change what an exponent acts on

(−3)² means (−3) × (−3), which is 9. In −3², the exponent acts on 3 before the leading negative is applied, so the result is −9. Write brackets clearly when squaring a negative value.

04

Check one line at a time

Copy the whole expression onto each line and change only the operation you just completed. Keeping the untouched terms helps prevent dropped negatives and skipped operations.

Words worth knowing
Expression
Numbers and operations that represent a value.
Exponent
Indicates repeated multiplication of a base.
Equal priority
Multiplication and division share a level; addition and subtraction share a level.
Predict · model · explain

Same numbers. Different grouping.

Compare a + b × c with (a + b) × c. Brackets change which operation happens first. Multiplication and division otherwise share priority and proceed left to right.

Choose values and predict the result.

Video explanation

Pause before the next calculation. Predict the sign and explain the model, then compare the reasoning.

Predict each next step, then reveal the explanation.

Example 1

−3 + 2 × (−4)

  1. Do multiplication first: 2 × (−4) = −8.
  2. Copy the remaining expression: −3 + (−8).
  3. Add the negative integers: −11.
Example 2

12 ÷ (−3) × 2

  1. Division and multiplication have equal priority, so start at the left.
  2. 12 ÷ (−3) = −4. The expression becomes −4 × 2.
  3. −4 × 2 = −8.
Example 3

8 − (−2 + 5)²

  1. Evaluate the brackets: −2 + 5 = 3.
  2. Evaluate the exponent: 3² = 9. The expression becomes 8 − 9.
  3. 8 − 9 = −1.

In the real world

A balance starts at −$8. Three deposits of $5 give −8 + 3 × 5 = 7 dollars. The grouped deposits are calculated before the balance is combined.
